NCD enables ALD decorative coatings with high productivity and low expense

   Usually, most of people want to make their costly articles and valuable electric devices more unique and more outstanding. In order to meet these requirements, ALD technology could provide goods with higher quality and more functions like anti-tarnishing, anti-wear and anti-biotic effects as well as more conspicuous colors by thin film interference phenomena. NCD, a next generation technology leader of solar cell, display and semiconductor manufacturing systems, demonstrated several precise color coatings on various samples with multi laminating metal oxide thin films prepared by atomic layer deposition.

The Essential Macleod software was used to estimate various color coating results, and most full visible range of colors could be obtained by controlling thicknesses of metal oxides with their light interferences and reflections. The various structures of five nano-laminated thin films of Al2O3 and TiO2 were designed in advance and the evaluated colors corresponded well with the simulated color spectrum results.

The parts of a watch band that were coated at a low growth temperature of 100°C using Lucida series ALD, show different, bright, warm, metallic and mirror-like colors of purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red, that are presenting nearly full rainbow colors. The back cover of a smart phone deposited by ALD shows the decorative red color with incident angles at 0° and gold one with incident angle at 90°. Also the colors are changed with various view angles, because the relative thicknesses of the layers are varied with the incident angles of light and then the light waves traveling through the thicknesses characterize their own colors matching the wave lengths.

ALD technology is a great method to provide various functions like anti-tarnishing, anti-wear and anti-bacterial effects as well as tailed decorative coatings on very complicated figures like 3D objects at low temperatures and the dominant film quality without particles and pinholes and also the application of ALD decorative coating has huge markets such as automotive, electronics, jewelry, medical device, sporting goods, watch and other advanced coating products. Even though there are these many advantages and potentials of ALD decorative coatings, ALD technology has not been well industrialized until now because of its low productivity and high product cost. However, NCD has developed the highest throughput and the largest-area ALD technology such as Lucida GS and GD Series ALD, so enables to easily provide remarkable ALD systems for economic decorative mass production coatings for customers who want to make their products to be outstanding and different.

NCD supplied Lucida GS100 ALD to KIER

   NCD has recently launched and supplied Lucida GS100 ALD, new version of Al2O3-ALD passivation equipment for high efficiency crystalline silicon solar cell, to KOREA INSTITUTE OF ENERGY RESEARCH (KIER).
This batch wafer process equipment has the specification below.
1) Batch capability: > 200 wafers/hour
2) Substrate size: 156 x 156mm2
3) Dimension: Approx. 450W x 617D x 1000H mm

KIEA, which is not only the largest but also prestigious national institute of Korea about energy, is using Lucida GS 100 to investigate what is the best with dielectrics and passivation layers for crystal silicon solar cell. So we expect that this system will contribute very much to the development of solar energy research.

Signed the contract to supply Lucida GD series ALD system for OLED encapsulation with Chinese display manufacturer, TIANMA

   OLED market is going to prospect fast gigantic growing in the near future because OLED has the possibilities of bending, folding and various forms like circle, therefore it will be applied for flexible and wearable devices. Flexible OLEDs need excellent thin encapsulation layers in order to keep the property from the permeation of water and oxygen under the external environment using repeated bending, folding and rolling of devices. However, the current encapsulation based on PECVD is not satisfied with future flexible OLEDs, so new encapsulation technology would absolutely be required.
Many OLED manufactures are currently reviewing to use ALD technology because of obtaining the highest property from the encapsulation layers of OLED, but they have not been solving the low throughput and particle issues followed by using their ALD systems.
In order to clear these problems, NCD has completed to develop the 6th ALD equipment for thin film encapsulation which satisfies high quality, large area and high throughput applying for the inventive ALD technology, and we have been also continuously testing customer’s samples. NCD’s ALD encapsulation layer shows much better properties than that of PECVD, and the encapsulation capability on application for foldable products has been confirmed from the customers. As a result, NCD has recently entered into the contract with Chinese display manufacturer, TIANMA to supply the 5.5th generation class ALD system of Lucida GD series for thin film encapsulation of OLED. It apparently shows that NCD’s core technologies and the result of developments have been approved by the oversea customer.
NCD will keep doing our best to set Lucida GD series as the standard of all of flexible OLED encapsulation equipment with this achievement and become the number one global ALD Company with the best competitiveness making new challenges and developments.
 
 
Signed the contract to supply ALD equipment to Chinese DMEGC for high efficiency solar cells

   NCD has just contracted with Chinese DMEGC to supply solar cell manufacturing equipment which would produces over 100MW. This equipment is Lucida GS Series ALD system for mass-producing high efficiency crystalline solar cell using Al2O3-ALD passivation to reduce surface defects on the rear side of wafers. This is paramount achievement because it is export of mass production equipment to China of the Mecca of solar cell production through winning against big international competitors. The production capability of this equipment has been improved through our a lot of production experience comparing to the previous systems. It certainly shows that the customer has proved the technology of NCD and the excellence of the equipment, and NCD would make it the most memorable turning point for our future oversea sales.
